Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0824598/IV (b)/1> and their acid addition and quaternary ammonium salts (wherein R is a hydrogen atom or acetyl group, R1 is a hydrogen atom or methyl group, and X is a methanesulphonyl or dimethylsulphamoyl group), and the preparation thereof by: (1) reacting a phenthiazine of the formula <FORM:0824598/IV (b)/2> with a reactive ester of the formula Y-CH2-CH2-O-CH2-CH2-OR (wherein Y is the acid residue of a reactive ester, e.g. a halogen atom or a sulphuric or sulphonic ester residue); (2) when R is an acetyl group, acetylating a corresponding phenthiazine in which R is a hydrogen atom. Other general methods for making the compounds of the invention are described.
