Abstract
Liquid pig iron is desulphurized by adding to a bath of the metal a mixture of a basic desulphurizing agent, and a hydrocarbon which liberates hydrogen and carbon on contact with the bath, the basic desulphurizing agent being brought to a finely divided state and impregnated with the hydrocarbon in the liquid or vapour state. The basic desulphurizing agent may be an alkali metal, or an alkaline earth metal, carbonate or oxide or a mixture thereof and may also be mixed with a basic slag, and the hydrocarbon may be an oil, a tar or a paraffin. The mixture may be added during pouring from one vessel to another, by injection in a gas e.g. nitrogen, or during a short blow in a Bessemer converter, the slag being carefully removed before conversion proper starts.
