Abstract
A non-metallic body is coated first with a nickel-phosphorus alloy containing 5-11% phosphorus, and then with copper. Thus a printed circuit may be made by (a) coating an insulating base with nickel-phosphorus alloy by deposition from an aqueous chemical plating bath of the nickel cation-hypophosphite anion type, (b) masking the areas of alloy on which no conductor is desired, (c) electrodepositing a layer of copper on the unmasked areas, and (d) removing the masking material and the areas of alloy masked thereby. Preferably the insulating base consists of textile-reinforced phenolformaldehyde condensation resin, and is prepared for nickel plating by being provided (i) with dispersed palladium particles to act as catalyst, and (ii) with a nickel strike from the strike bath disclosed in Specification 824,090 [Group II]. Heat treatment at 325 DEG F. preferably follows the nickel plating. Masking may be achieved by a conventional silk screen technique. Specifications 761,062, 761,556, 761,567, 785,693, 785,694, 785,695, 785,696 and 786,175 also are referred to.
