Abstract
824,072. Magnetic compositions. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 16, 1957 [Oct. 19,1956], No. 32345/57. Class 38 (2). A ferromagnetic material consists of crystals or mixed crystals having a composition according to the formula Ba (4-a-b-c) Sr a Pb b Ca c Me<SP>II</SP> (2-d-e-f) Co<SP>II</SP> d Cu<SP>II</SP> e Mn<SP>II</SP> f Fe<SP>III</SP> (36-g) CO<SP>III</SP> g O 60 where Me<SP>II</SP> is one or more of the bivalent metals Fe, Ni, Zn, Mg and the coefficients have values from zero up to the following figures: a, 1.0; b, 0.7; c, 0.6; d, 2.0; e, 0.6; f, 0.6; g, 0.5. Part of the iron may be replaced by chromium or aluminium. The crystals have a rhombohedral structure the elementary cell of which has a c-axis of 113.1 and an a-axis of 5.9 in the hexagonal crystal system. The materials have a preferred plane (and high permeability) or preferred direction of magnetization (suitable for permanent magnets and microwave equipment) corresponding to negative and positive constants of crystal-anisotropy, in many cases depending on whether they are at a temperature above or below one which is determined mainly by the amount of bivalent cobalt. The material may be made by sintering together oxides or compounds which convert into oxides. The metal oxides may be partly or wholly replaced by reaction products of at least two of the oxides. The materials may be presintered one or more times at 1000 C., reground and sintered at between 1000 and 1450 C., preferably between 1200 and 1350 C. If no divalent Fe is to be left the material may be finally heated in oxygen between 1000 and 1250 C. The mixing may be in ethyl alcohol, silicates and fluorides may be added as sintering agents, and an organic binder may be added when shaping it before sintering. The manufacture of many compounds having formulae falling within the main formula is described and their magnetic properties are tabulated. Sintering in oxygen, nitrogen, and air, and slow cooling in air, and oxygen, are mentioned.
