[Also in Group XXX] In an elevator, which can be used for stacking boxes or transferring them from one conveyer to another at a different level, the boxes are raised by pawls 8 pivoted on vertically reciprocating rods 7 on the upstroke and are retained by supports 13 mounted on the framework 1 on the downstroke. Each rod 7 is mounted on a vertical shaft 4 which is reciprocated by the double-acting piston of a compressed air cylinder 6. The pawls 8 tend to take the position shown in Fig. 1, but on the downstroke they are swung upwardly either by contacting the boxes 3 or by means of studs 9 on shafts 10 mounted on the rods 7 and reciprocated by compressed air cylinder mechanism 11. Resilient rollers 12 on the pawls 8 facilitate movement along the sides of the boxes. The pawls 13 are moved out of the path of the boxes by pins 14 on a vertically reciprocating shaft 15. When the boxes are to be transferred to an upper conveyer, the upper conveyer is provided with two carriages 20, 21, Fig. 3, provided with rollers 22 and having wheels 23 running on rails 24. The carriages are moved apart by piston-andcylinder mechanism 25 to allow the top box 3 to pass through the conveyer and are then brought together by the same mechanism to support the box as the stacking mechanism moves downward. All carriers 8 and supports 13 may be put out of action except the lowest ones. A stack fed into the machine may be broken down by providing pivoted members 28, Fig. 1, on the framework 1 which are adapted to engage the handles of the boxes. In use the stack is raised until the members 28 engage the box which is second from the bottom. The lowest box is then lowered until it rests on the conveyer 2 by which it is carried away.
