Abstract

Alkali metal (including ammonium) tungstates are purified by forming a saturated alkaline solution of a normal alkali metal tungstate containing undissolved normal tungstate, acidifying to pH of 7 to 7.5 to dissolve the normal alkaline metal tungstate crystals and further acidifying the solution to a pH of 6 to 6.9 to crystallize the corresponding alkali metal paratungstate. Acidification is preferably effected at 80-100 DEG C. with hydrochloric acid; a small amount of sodium nitrite may be added to avoid reduction of the tungstate during acidification. The alkali metal paratungstate crystals obtained on cooling may be treated with a calcium chloride solution to form calcium tungstate.
