Abstract
A composition for imparting water-repellency to a material comprises an amylhydrogenosiloxane and a titanium compound capable of hydrolysis to an oxide of titanium. Titanium compounds specified are tetra-alkyl orthotitanates and condensed alkyl titanates containing alkyl radicals of 1 to 10 C atoms, ethanolamine titanates, and reaction products of TiCl4 with ethylene glycol, propane diol, glycerol, and 1:3- and 2:3-butane diols, which may be further reacted with amines, e.g. alkanolamines, as described in Specifications 804,989, 804,990 and 812,505. The compositions may be in the form of solutions in organic solvents or of aqueous emulsions in which trimethylbenzylchloride, cetyl - trimethylammonium bromide, triethanolamine oleate and octadecylamine acetate are suitable emulsifying agents. Methyl-, ethyl-, amyl-, phenyl- and methylphenyl-siloxanes (R/Si=1.1 to 1.9) and/or siloxane oils (R/Si=2) may also be added, the preferred proportions (by weight) being amylhydrogenosiloxane 20 to 100%, siloxane resin 0 to 80% and siloxane oil 0 to 80%. The preferred proportions (by weight) of the essential ingredients are 0.5 to 6.0% of amylhydrogeno-siloxane and 0.1 to 0.5% of titanium. In examples, the composition consists of: (1 to 4) an aqueous emulsion of amyl hydrogenosiloxane in toluene, methylsiloxane oil, emulsifying agent, and the triethanolamine modified reaction product of TiCl4 and 1:3-butanediol and in (2) amylsiloxane resin; (5) the emulsion of (1) without the siloxane oil; (6) the emulsion of (5) except that the catalyst is made by using ethylene glycol instead of the butane diol; (7) a white spirit solution of a mixture of amylhydrogenosiloxane in toluene, methylsiloxane oil and butyl titanate. Uses.-For rendering water-repellent metals, textiles, leather, paper, cardboard, masonry, wood and concrete. Specifications 708,821, [Group VIII], and 723,989 also are referred to.
