Abstract
821,517. Converting. MULLARD RADIO VALVE CO. Ltd. Aug. 31, 1956 [June 21, 1955], No. 17917/55. Class 38 (2). [Also in Group XL (c)] A D.C. voltage for external use is provided by a circuit in which a sawtooth current is generated in an inductance by charging a capacitance during the forward stroke, discharging it through the inductance and a transistor during the flyback and then permitting the energy in the inductance to discharge at a constant voltage during the next forward stroke. In Fig. 3, a capacitor 61 is charged resonantly from the H.T. supply during the forward stroke through an inductor L2, a diode D2 being provided when necessary to prevent the capacitor discharging through the supply. At the end of the forward stroke a synchronizing pulse applied to the base of a transistor T renders the transistor conducting for a sufficiently long period for the capacitor to discharge resonantly through an inductor L1. The current in the inductor accordingly rises to a peak whereupon the voltage across its terminals reverses and a linear discharge commences through a diode D1 and a substantially constant voltage source V, so producing the forward stroke and charging the capacitor C2 in the source. The voltage across this capacitor may be used in an external circuit. In an alternative circuit operating in a similar manner (Fig. 2, not shown), the positions of the capacitor C1 and transistor are interchanged. The transistor may be operated in an avalanche manner. This may be effected either by causing the input pulses to pass the base voltage through a value at which avalanche multiplication occurs or by applying the pulses through a blocking capacitor to the collector so that the collector potential is suddenly brought to a sufficiently high value to initiate avalanche multiplication. Preferably, the base is simultaneously biased in the forward direction by regenerative reaction between the collector and base. A rectifier connected between the inductance L1 and the junction of the collector and blocking capacitor will prevent the synchronizing pulses discharging through the inductor. A capacitor may be connected between collector and base to improve the avalanche operation. Specification 642,910 is referred to.
