Abstract

821,289. Nuclear reactors. PARSONS & CO. Ltd., C. A. Nov. 27, 1957 [Nov. 30, 1956], No. 36782/56. Class 39(4). A method of removing gaseous fission products from liquid nuclear fuel comprises establishing a restricted flow of the fuel adjacent a free surface thereof such that the fuel boils in consequence of the restricted flow and gaseous fission products are releaxed at the free surface. The apparatus shown in the Figure comprises a refractory tube 1 of low neutron cross-section supported concentrically within an outer tubularcasing 10 which projects upwardly from the core vessel of a liquid metal fuelled reactor. The tube 1 is provided with a renewable liner 6 and a thick tubular insert 7, both of which may be of graphite, and extends upwardly within the casing 10 to provide a free surface 12 within a header attached to the casing 10. Liquid fuel passes up the pipe 1 sufficiently slowly to ensure that fission causes boiling, and after reaching the free surface the fuel returns down the outside of the pipe 1 to the reactor. The header may be maintained at a high vacuum, in which case some liquid metal vapour will be carried over and removed together with gaseous fission products through a pipe 13, the liquid metal being separated in a subsequent process. Alternatively the header may be maintained, for example, at atmospheric pressure, and a condenser (not shown) is associated with the header vessel to condense and return to the free surface of the large volume of liquid metal vapour which would otherwise be carried over.
