Abstract

821,143. Airships ; floating containers. GREENER, F. W. G. Aug. 26, 1957 [July 11, 1956], No. 21438/56. Classes 4 and 113. Means for transporting fluid, e.g. a hydrocarbon comprises a collapsible envelope adapted to be loaded with, and emptied of, the fluid, and when extended by its load being externally of streamline shape and being buoyant in a natural fluid medium in and through which it is to be moved, said envelope being collapsible for the purpose of being packed into a small space when empty for quick and easy transport, and means being provided for attaching or connecting the envelope, when loaded, to a power driven mobile vehicle whereby it can be towed in line astern thereof through the said natural medium. For transportation of natural gas the envelope would be formed as an airship and ballasted and towed by another airship or attached to a gondola and power unit. At destination the envelope would be emptied and folded for return to the gas source by sea or air transport. A winch cable, carried aloft by a helicopter, would be attached to the envelope to enable it to be winched to the ground for emptying. For transporting oil, the envelope would be water-borne and towed by a ship. It also would be folded after emptying for return to the oil wells by sea or air transport. The envelope may be of plastic material provided with hooks or loops for towing or it may have an enclosing net for attachment to the towing cable. To facilitate packing, the envelope may be made in separate sections of complementary shape so that when secured together they would form a streamlined body.
