821,061. Fluid measuring apparatus. RAMSHALL, J. D. July 17, 1957 [July 27, 1956], No. 23349/56. Class 40 (3). Light-sensitive cells are operated by the level of liquid in a container to measure the time period taken for a quantity of liquid to flow into or out of a container and/or to measure an effect dependent on the liquid and that time period, e.g. the rate of consumption of and the number of revolutions performed by, an engine when supplied with a known quantity of fuel. In Fig. 1, the glass container 14 receives the liquid fuel from a feed pipe 11 via the electrically-operated valve 12 and the engine is connected to feed pipe 13. At each of the four container reference levels 21, 22, 23 and 24 light is directed through the container and operates a photo-electric cell when the liquid is below that level, each cell is connected via an amplifier to a relay which can operate when the cell is illuminated. The supply voltage, connected to the unit via switch 42 operates the valve 12 which allows the container to fill to a level 17. Fuel between the lamp and photo-cell at level 21 prevents relay SR1 from operating, thus lighting the lamp 46 to indicate that the apparatus is ready for use. Operating switch 56 is pressed closing the valve 12 so that fuel for the engine is now drawn from the container 14. The fuel level falls below level 22 operating relay SR2 which switches on the revolution counter 51 and the time meter 48. The fuel level in falling below level 23 operates relay SR3 opening the operating coil circuit of relay SR2 and switching of the counter and timer. The volume of liquid between levels 22 and 23 is a known quantity. The further reduction in the level of the liquid below level 24 operates relay SR4 which opens valve 12 and resets the equipment for the next test.
