Abstract

820,679. Valves. GRINNELL CORPORATION. July 22, 1957 [July 26, 1956], No. 23087/57. Class 135. A diaphragm valve has a diaphragm actuating member 24 formed with a socket 26, means, e.g. the tube net 43 and screw stud 38, connecting member 24 and diaphragm 17 and having a first portion 44 in the socket overlying the rim 46 of an aperture 47 in the bottom of the socket, means 50 carried by and limiting rotation of the first portion about its longitudinal axis, the first portion being movable longitudinally with respect to the rotation limiting means. In order to attach a diaphragm to the compressor, the diaphragm is rotated so that its stud screws into the nut. The socket is elliptical in crosssection and the nut is prevented from rotating therein by having the diameter of its head 44 slightly less than the minor axis of the ellipse, the head being slotted at 48 and carrying a key 50 in the slot which is slightly less than the major axis of the ellipse, so that the key jams on the sides of the socket and prevents rotation of the nut. The key has end legs resting on the bottom of the socket so that a space is left between the bottom of the key and the bottom of the slot 48, whereby, when the compressor is lowered by the manually-actuated screw 22, the compressor together with the jammed key moves relative to the nut to compress the diaphragm on a weir, thus preventing the stud alone exerting pressure on the diaphragm. In a modification, the key rests directly on the bottom of the socket and the stud slot 48 extends within the aperture 47.
