Abstract

820,406. Electric selective signalling systems. GIDDINGS & LEWIS MACHINE TOOL CO. June 15, 1956 [June 23, 1955], No. 18588/56. Class 40 (1). In a digital-to-analogue converter, data is read from a punched tele-type record tape, staticized on electromagnetic relays and converted into a form in which it is represented by the phase difference between two constant-frequency pulse trains. The converter shown in Fig. 1 handles five individual channels of data, each channel, for example channel 1, comprising a frequency-divider FD1 (8 cascaded flip-flops), receiving pulses from a reference pulse generator 10 via an input gate G1 and producing a squarewave pulse train, as shown, which, when it represents no data, is in phase with, and identical to, a reference pulse train produced from pulses from the reference pulse generator by a frequency-divider 12 identical to that used in each data channel. Thus each generated square pulse is " up " for a period of 256 reference pulses from the reference pulse generator and then down for 256 reference pulses. The output pulse train from channel 1 can be made either to lead the reference pulse train-to represent positive data-by feeding extra pulses, interleaved with the reference pulses, to the frequency divider FD1 via a lead 34, or to lag behind the reference pulse train by stopping some of the pulses from the reference pulse generator reaching the frequency-divider. This is done by a pulse deleting circuit PD1, which, under the control of pulses on line 36, closes the gate G1 at the appropriate times. Thus, if, for example, six pulses are entered on line 34 then the output pulse train from channel 1 will lead the reference pulse train by six reference pulses and if six pulses are entered on line 36 then it will lag behind the reference pulse train by six reference pulses. The pulses on the lines 34 and 36 are obtained from the data read from the punched tape.
