A machine for steaming soil comprises at least one rotatable drum through which soil to be treated is fed and simultaneously subjected to the action of heat. The machine comprises a chassis 1 supporting a motor 2, a gear box 3 and at least one drum 15, the motor serving both to drive the machine and to rotate the dum about its longitudinal axis. Soil is conveyed from the ground to the drum or drums by means of a shovel 7 and a conveyer 6, the conveyer discharging the soil into the drum past a heater 8 and a filter 9 which serves to separate stones from the soil. The stones fall to the ground via the shoot 10 and the soil enters the drum where it is engaged by projections on the inside of the drum and is thereby caused to travel along the drum as the latter rotates, its passage being further facilitated by the fact that the axis of the drum is slightly inclined to the horizontal. A flame extends from the burner 23 into the drum and heats the soil, thereby transforming the moisture content thereof into steam, and the treated soil falls to the ground via a shoot 22, its temperature being registered on the thermometer 31. Hydraulic motors are provided for adjusting the inclination of the drum and for raising or lowering the shovel 7 and conveyer 6 into their transport position.
