A length-measuring wheel for cables, wires and strip materials has a periphery consisting of a metal hoop 3 mounted on a flexible underlay 2 and surrounded by a sleeve 4 of wear-resistant material having a thickness not greater than 1.25 millimetre. The hoop 3 may be of steel and the underlay 2 of rubber; pneumatic rubber tubing or felt. Pins 6 hold the hoop and the sleeve 4, which may be of synthetic fibre fabric, in place on the wheel.
