Abstract
819,028. Automatic circuit-breakers. FEDERAL PACIFIC ELECTRIC CO. Oct. 25, 1957, No. 33441/57. Class 38 (5). The moving contact arm 16 of a circuit-breaker is coupled by a rod 20 to a driven member 24 carried on two arms 26 pivoted at 28 which is also the pivotal axis for a driving member 32. The latter has a shaped face 32a which, when the member 32 is moved by a solenoid plunger 38, engages a roller 50b on a latching member 50 so as to tend to rotate the member 50 in a clockwise direction (anti-clockwise in Fig. 1) about its pivot 52 on the member 24. However, a pivot pin 50d on a leg 50c of the member 50 is retained at the axis 28 by a link 88 of a release mechanism so that the member 24 is rotated to close the breaker (Figs. 1 and 4). In this position the member 50 is retained by a latch 68 pivoted at 70 and biased by a spring 78 on a stop bolt 72. The latch 68 carries a leaf spring 76 for operating a snap-action switch 82 and having two arms 76a, 76b with a doubleheaded rod 84 to limit the degree of separation of the arms. As the roller 50b is moved toward the final closed position it lifts both the latch 68 and arm 76b to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 5. The switch 82, however, is not operated since the looped end of the spring 76 on a pin 74 is moved downward, but when the latch 68 drops into the latched position (Fig. 4) the switch 82 is operated by the upper arm 76a. The switch 82 is arranged to cause disconnection of the solenoid so that the plunger 38 and member 32 are retracted by springs (not shown). The link 88 of the release mechanism is connected to a centrally-pivoted lever 90 retained by series toggles 92, 94 and 96, 98 which are in turn retained by an armaturelatch 100 trippable by an electromagnet 102. The circuit-breaker opening springs (not shown) act on the member 24 so that when the pin 50d is allowed to move by the release mechanism, member 50 rotates clockwise to disengage the latch 68 and the circuit-breaker opens. The release mechanism is reset by a spring 104. The member 24 also operates an arc-blow-out air puffer.
