Class 44 A latch such as a door latch comprises a frame including a securing plate 1 provided with a pair of lugs braced by a pin 4 on which is pivotally supported against the action of a return spring 20, a bolt 5 having a handle 6 and a beak 10 adapted to be secured at an adjustable distiance from said pin, the beak having a primary rack 15 engaging a secondary rack 16 provided on an arm 17 which is pivotally supported by the frame the latter serving as an abutment for one end of the return spring the other end of which presses the secondary rack against the primary rack so as to hold the beak at the required distance. The beak 10 is formed at one end of a slide 9 which is I-shaped in cross section, the web of the slide engaging a longitudinal slot in the remainder of the bolt so that the beak can be adjusted in relation to the pin 4. The arm 17 is pivoted to the frame by means of the pin 4. By manually depressing the arm 17 against the resistance of the spring 20 the slide can be adjusted to any desired position whereupon release of the arm engages the two racks to maintain the slide in the desired position.
