Abstract
818,689. Disc brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. March 14, 1957 [April 2, 1956], No. 8500/57. Class 103 (1). In a disc brake actuating device including a plurality of circumferentially spaced applying fluid motors, formed in a carrier member, first and second fluid systems are provided to actuate separate sets of fluid motors. In the multi-plate disc brake shown,. a plurality of circumferentially spaced piston and cylinder mechanisms is provided on a fixed carrier member 24 of the brake such that actuation of piston and cylinder mechanisms urges pressure plate 16 to the left (as shown in Fig. 2) compressing the axially slidable discs 12 rotatable with wheel 18 between the non-rotatable axially slidable pressure plates 14 and fixed reaction plate 22. Alternate piston and cylinder mechanisms are linked by means of hydraulic connection 36 in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 9, starting with inlet passage 44 and cylinder 42. The path traced out by hydraulic connection 36 is such that it curves inwardly towards the centre of the brake at 48 to avoid the adjacent cylinder and then turns radially outwardly to intersect at point 50 with the bore of cylinder 52 to communicate hydraulic pressure thereto. The hydraulic line then continues its winding movement to avoid adjacent cylinders and terminates in outlet passage 58. A continuous pneumatic line 38 is provided with an inlet at 70 and an outlet at 82 and communicates with alternate cylinders which are by-passed by the hydraulic line such that an alternative applying means is provided in case of failure of the hydraulic supply.
