Abstract

818,482. Resistance measuring. EVER SHED & VIGNOLES Ltd. Feb. 8, 1956 [Feb. 16, 1955], No. 4682/55. Class 37. In apparatus for measuring earth resistance, in which the current supplied to an earth circuit is maintained at a predetermined ratio to the current in the resistance of a potentiometer, so that when the potentiometer output is balanced with the voltage drop across the portion of the earth circuit under test the resistance of the potentiometer up to balance point is directly proportional to, and is calibrated in terms of, the test resistance, a voltage is injected into the potentiometer circuit to compensate for natural earth potentials, and a device indicates when the test resistance is in circuit. As shown, the predetermined ratio between the current supplied to a vernier potentiometer P, which may be shunted by a resistor 16, and that fed to earthed electrodes Cl, C2 is obtained by adjusting resistors R1, R2, R3, R4. Any natural earth potential between electrodes P1, P2, which determine the test resistance, is balanced by the output of a potential divider 22 before the test resistance is connected to the potentiometer P. If battery B is initially connected to electrodes P1, P2, an indication is obtained on an instrument 26 when these electrodes are positioned in the earth.
