Abstract
The tendency of a solution of an oil-soluble basic salt of an organic acid in an oily medium to gel with water vapour, is prevented by incorporating in the solution a compound which is soluble in the oily medium and contains a polar group. The oily medium may be any liquid having a dielectric constant of 10 or less, particularly hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, xylene, pentane, heptane, and petroleum fractions from gasoline to lubricating oil fractions. The basic salt may be derived from a carboxylic acid, a sulphonic acid or a phosphorus-containing organic acid, and may be a sodium, potassium, lithium, ammonium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, lead, aluminium, copper, nickel, tin, cobalt or manganese salt. The basic salt contains in the molecule a metal oxide, hydroxide, carbonate, sulphide, sulphite or oxalate, and the salt contains 4 or more equivalents of metal per one equivalent of organic acid. The compound containing a polar group may be a monoor polyhydric alcohol, such as methanol, ethanol, hexanol and decanol, an alkyl amine such as decylamine, an alkyl phenol, an alkyl aromatic carboxylic acid, an alkyl aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acid, a naphthenic acid, an aliphatic carboxylic acid, a sulphonic acid, a phosphoric acid or a salt of these acids. In examples basic salts are basic calcium alkyl salicylates containing calcium hydroxide and calcium carbonate, basic copper alkyl salicylates containing copper oxide, and basic ferric alkyl salicylates containing ferric oxide (the salicylates are derived from mono- and di-C14-C18-alkylsalicylic acids), basic copper naphthenates containing copper oxide (derived from petroleum naphthenic acids), and a basic calcium petroleum sulphonate containing calcium hydroxide; the oily media are medicinal oil, mineral lubricating oil, and xylene; the compounds containing polar groups are neutral calcium alkyl salicylates, free alkyl salicylic acids, free naphthenic acids, decanol and methanol.
