Abstract
817,714. Aerials. COLE Ltd., E. K., and ROBINSON, A. G. G. H. March 26, 1957 [March 27, 1956], No. 9450/56. Class 40 (7). An aerial system intended for an airborne radar has two alternative radiation patterns which may be respectively a narrow beam and a cosecant-squared beam. The system consists of a primary element, which may be a waveguide fed dipole, mounted at the focal point of a main reflector such as B, which may be paraboloidal, to give a narrow beam pattern. The main reflector is provided with slots as shown which extend parallel to the electric vector of the incident energy. Through these slots may be inserted parallel plates separated by less than half the working wavelength, and having their front edges contoured to give the second radiation pattern. The plates may either be pivoted as at D so that they turn about an axis at the edge of the main reflector when moved from their operative to their inoperative position and vice versa, or they may be arranged to slide.
