Abstract
In a process for the selective inactivation of one or more trace metals from an aqueous solution, ions having a higher stability constant are inactivated in preference to those having a lower stability constant by bringing the aqueous solution into close proximity with one or more insoluble chelating resins. Such resins may be manufactured by the methods descrived in Specification 767,821 (Group IV(a)]. Copper ions are inactivated in preference to calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium ions in water containing them. Where iron instead of copper is present with the above four ions and the latter are unobjectionable, the iron may be thus selectively inactivated. Lead may be selectively inactivated in water intended for the preparation of food or beverages and containing hardness and normal saline constituents necessary to give desired taste. Manganese, nickel and chromium which, like copper and iron, may be troublesome as regards catalytic activity, or have a detrimental effect on a plant or machinery, may be similarly inactivated. Water containing only such higher-stability-constant ions may be freed from them by the process of the invention.
