Abstract
817,025. One-way clutches. ROELS, H. July 25, 1957 [Aug. 6, 1956], No. 23615/57. Class 80 (2). In a one-way clutch the driving and driven members have facial cam surfaces inclined at different angles but in the same direction, and a rotatable and axially movable bush having conforming cam surfaces is located between the driving and driven members such that torque is transmitted by the wedging of the bush between the driving and driven members. A driving member 29 has an end face having a plane surface 50, an inclined cam surface 51 and a step 52, which surfaces co-operate with conforming surfaces 53, 54 and 55, respectively, on a bush 32 rotatably and axially free on the driven shaft 28. The opposite end of the bush 32 is formed of a surface consisting of an ascending part 48 with a comparatively gradual slope and a large circumferential length and a descending part 49 of smaller length. A collar 30 having conforming-surfaces 46, 47 is secured to the shaft 28. The bush is spring-loaded in the direction of free-wheeling by a spring 41 connected between the bush and the driving member. The slopes of the cam surfaces 45, 51 are chosen such that driving between the collar 30 and member 29 is provided by wedging of the bush but immediate release on reversal of torque is provided since the angle of the surface 51 is greater than the angle of friction. To provide immediate engagement of the clutch concentric bushes 32, 33 are provided with their camsurfaces out of phase and to balance the axial loads similar bushes may be used on the other side of the driving member. In a modification the cam surface corresponding to 45 is provided by a threaded sleeve acting as the inner bush, the outer bush being loaded by a helical spring.
