Abstract
Fine filaments and multi-filament yarns are produced by extruding molten polychlorotrifluoroethylene and drawing the resulting filaments at least 75 times their original length while maintained at a temperature of at least 300 DEG C. The polychlorotrifluoroethylene resins preferably have molecular weights between 25,000 and 75,000, melt viscosities at 230 DEG C. of not less than 0.1 megapoise and melting points of about 205 DEG to 210 DEG C. and are preferably extruded at temperatures between 360 DEG and 375 DEG C. The filaments may be heated during drawing in an electrically heated tube or chimney and, when drawing in the molten state is complete, the filaments may be quenched in a cool air stream or in a water bath and then wound on a wind-up spool or bobbin. The yarn may subsequently be cold drawn at temperatures between 30 DEG and 130 DEG C. to the extent of 300 to 700 per cent to attain the maximum strength, and then stabilized against strinkage by an annealing process comprising passing the yarn through a passage or groove in a metal bar heated to 150 DEG to 200 DEG C.
