In a subset a transistor forms part of an oscillator which generates a different frequency for each digit key depressed and under control of change-over contacts also serves as a speech amplifier. When the subscriber takes down his receiver closure of the cradle switch contacts 1hu, 2hu connects the transmitter M and receiver H to the line in the normal manner. Depression of a digit key (not shown) closes the corresponding one of contacts t1 ... t0 and changes over contacts 4t, 5t, thus disconnecting the transmitter M and receiver H and substituting the oscillator including transistor Tr, the operated contact of t1 ... t10 switching different valves of Ls3, or Ks, or both, into the tank circuit to determine the frequency to be generated. When the connection has been established the subscriber operates the changeover switch which changes over contacts 6u ... 15u. The transistor circuit is thus rearranged as an amplifier for incoming signals, the secondary winding of the transformer G1, G2, G3 being connected to its input side and the secondary L4 of the transformer Ls2, Ls3, L4 being connected to the receiver H. The change-over contacts may consist of protective tube contacts, that is of inner contact springs and outer contact springs enclosed in a sealed glass tube, the springs carrying magnetic flux by means of which the contacts are operated under the control of an external currentcarrying coil or of a permanent magnet, each contact forming in effect an armature.
