Abstract

An aqueous silica sol, of concentration greater than 15 per cent by weight of silica and average diameter 710 millimicrons, is obtained by heating above 50 DEG C. an aqueous, alkali-metal silicate solution, preferably Na2SiO3 (10 per cent SiO2); electrolysing the solution to remove alkali metal ions and oxygen using a mercury cathode until the weight ratio silica: alkali metal oxide is greater than 50:1, preferably 130:1 to 200:1, and removing water if desired to concentrate the sol. During electrolysis when alkali metal forms an amalgam with the cathode, alkali metal silicate may be added to maintain the desired concentrations. Specifications 645,703, 667,154 and U.S.A.
