816,226. Automatic gain control. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd., and BOWN, G. C. S. March 5, 1957 [March 5, 1956], No. 6851/56. Class 40 (5). [Also in Group XL (b)] In a television receiver in which the black level of the signal output of the video amplifier 4 varies in accordance with the mean level of the signal (i.e. amplifier 4 enhances the -D.C. component with respect to the A.C. component) such a signal cannot be employed directly in an A.G.C. circuit 15 of the kind in which a control voltage is derived by measuring the height of the black level relative to the tips of the synchronizing pulses and it is first necessary to remove the D.C. component by means of capacitor 11 and then restore the normal D.C. component by means of the peak detection action of the grid-cathode circuit of the conventional synchronizing signal separator valve 12 before supplying the signal to circuit 15.
