813,225. Extruding polythene strip. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. April 5, 1957, No. 11185/57. Class 87(2). A process for the production of stress-free polythene strip comprises extruding heated polythene through an arcuate die and allowing the extrusion to fall onto the horizontally moving portion of a continuous travelling belt and there to take up the shape, during cooling, of a flat strip. The strip may be trimmed to a pre-determined width in preparation for punching into discs used as insulating means for coaxial telecommunication cables. A strip 11 of semi-annular section is extruded from a die 9 and falls onto a belt 1, driven by a capstan 2 and running on rollers 3, 4, 6, 7 and tension applying roller 5. After natural cooling on the horizontal portion of the belt the now flat strip is drawn, on rollers 14, 15, 16, by a capstan 21 through a cooling bath 17 and then through a device 20 to trim its edges. The strip is held in contact with the capstan 21 by a freely running belt 22 on rollers 23, 24 and tension applying roller 25. On leaving the capstan 21 the trimmed cooled strip is drawn over rollers 27, 28 and is taken up by a spool 29. The capstan 2 is driven by a variable speed gear so that the speed of the belt 1 is the same as the rate of extrusion. The capstan 21 is driven by a variable speed gear so that the strip is not tensioned during its passage between the capstans and the spool 29 is lightly driven by a slipping belt to again avoid tensioning the strip. The aperture of the die 9 may be adjusted by screws 38.
