812,899. Fire-finishing glass surfaces. PILKINGTON BROS. Ltd., WYNNE, H. C., and YATES, D. J. May, 7, 1957 [May 9, 1956], No. 14477/56. Class 56. In the manufacture of face-plates of television cathode ray tubes and similar bowlshaped glass articles the outer surface of such plates or bowls is given a fire-finish. For this purpose each plate or bowl 14 is supported, convex face uppermost, on a carriage 4 which is reciprocated horizontally along rails 3 beneath a burner 17 that directs curtains of flame downwardly. To ensure uniform spacing of the burner from that portion of the curved surface being flamed the burner is raised and lowered, to follow the curvature, by cam-followers 29 associated therewith and engaging cam-slots 28 in parts 27 of the carriage 4. The sides of the plate or bowl parallel to the direction of movement of the carriage are simultaneously flamed by burners 53; these are slidably mounted in brackets 51 and are caused to approach or recede from one another to follow the side curvature by followers 55 engaging cam slots in brackets 58 on the carriage. The sides of the plate or bowl transverse to the direction of movement of the carriage are simultaneously flamed by burners 60 pivotally supported on vertical axes on the carriage and moving therewith (one burner at each end of the carriage, the rear of one such burner being shown). An arrangement of another cam track and follower and a mechanical connection between the burner supports causes the burners 60 to swing, during reciprocation of the carriage, so as to sweep the transverse ends of the plate a bowl at a constant distance therefrom.
