Abstract
812,814. Coated fabrics; transfer paper &c. COX, S. W. Oct. 11, 1955 [Oct. 72, 1954], No. 29419/54. Classes 96 and 140. [Also in Group XVI] A transfer receiving material comprises a thin permeable support, such as carbonizing tissue, and a coating thereon consisting, when dried, substantially of a synthetic hydrophilic wax. The transfer receiving material receives an impression, by the action of local pressure at room temperature, from a transfer paper coated with a powdered or granular substance. In the preparation of a transfer paper, a sheet of thin paper, e.g. glassine paper is coated with the following mixture: 7 lbs. sepia enamel, 6 pints industrial alcohol, 2¢ ozs. phthalate plasticizer, 15 ozs. " Aroclar " (Registered Trade Mark), resin 4465 dissolved in 1“ pints aromatic hydrocarbon with the addition of 8 ozs. nitro-cellulose cotton in 1 gallon of " Cellosolve " (Registered Trade Mark). The material is dried after coating. If desired, an undercoating consisting of ¢ oz. of carnauba wax, ¢ oz. of yellow beeswax, and ¢ oz. of ceresine wax dissolved in 2 pints of an aromatic hydrocarbon may be applied before the above coating. An alternative coating for a wax undercoated paper may consist of: 3 lbs. of green ceramic pigment X787, 6 pints of industrial alcohol, 3 ozs. phthalate plasticizer, 1¢ pints of nitro-cellulose solution made from 8 ozs. nitro-cellulose cotton dissolved in 1 gallon of " Cellosolve " (Registered Trade Mark). A further alternative coating for a wax undercoated paper may consist of: 7 lbs. of sepia enamel, 4 ozs. of " Seekay " (Registered Trade Mark) wax dissolved in 1 pint of benzol, 6 pints of industrial alcohol, and a quantity of nitrocellulose as necessary as a thickener. A thin water permeable tissue paper, e.g. carbonizing tissue, is coated with a solution of polyethylene glycol having a molecular weight of about 6000. This solution may consist of 2“ lbs. of carbowax, ¢ pint of water, and 6¥ pints of industrial alcohol. The tissue paper receives a print by being placed face to face with a transpaper coated as described above, the transfer of the print being effected at room temperature by pressure exerted between dies or by a pen or stylus. In one method, a die bearing a desired pattern in relief is pressed against the coated transfer paper and tissue paper. Alternative, a die is placed beneath the papers and a steel roller is passed over the top paper with sufficient pressure to effect transfer. The tissue paper bearing the required design is then applied to a ceramic article and then moistened on its back to permit its removal, leaving the design on the article which is then fired. If desired, the coating on the transfer paper may contain a resist material, e.g. a resin capable of coalescing under heat to form a resist layer that can be transferred, from the coated tissue paper, to a sheet of metal to be etched.
