Sausage meat 9 extruded into a casing 5, 5<SP>1</SP> bunched up on a feed tube 4 is twisted into links by rotation of the feed tubes 4 while the filler sausage length is held between grippers 12 while rubber &c. rollers 12 close in on the casing at the inner end of the tube 4 and so effect the rotation and twisting withdrawal of the casing being retarded by a rubber ring 19, Fig. 3. Thereafter the linked sausages proceed along a trough and are wound up helically on a reel 14. In threading the easing over the tube 4, the casing presses backward a sliding disc 7 against the pull of a tension spring 8 which later during filling urges the casing off the tube 4. After twisting the neck may be sealed by a clip clamped on the neck by dies 48, 49. The various operations are controlled in timed relation from a control shaft 16 rotated by a gear 17 from a gear driven from a disc gear 18 on the tube 4. To prevent the casing from slipping off the filling tube 4 too easily the front end of the tube is enlarged, Fig. 3, and an elastic ring 19 thereon retards the casing. In Fig. 5 the continuously rotated main shaft 30 carries a friction segment 31 which rotates shaft 31 carrying a drive belt to rotate the twist tube 28 a predetermined number of times. The grippers 39 are allowed to close on a sausage by a cam 37 rotated by a segmental can 32 operating a cranked lever 33 by its roller to hold the sausage during twisting. In Fig. 9 the filled sausage is squeezed by stirrups 58 to initiate the neck which is completed by rotation of the grippers 51 and the twist tube while the sausage is held in gripper 56. The grippers 51 have a lining 52 to retard the forcing forward of the casing 5 during filling. The feed tube has a detachable outlet 61 which further back the tube may be oval (63, Fig. 8, not shown) to retard the movement of the casing from the tube to compact the filling.
