Abstract
Tachysterol is obtained by irradiating with ultra-violet light precalciferol in solution in a solvent therefore at a temperature comprised between -20 DEG C. and +20 DEG C. whereby an equilibrium mixture of precalciferol and tachysterol results. Irradiation may be effected in ether or ethoxyethanol, preferably between -5 DEG C. and +2 DEG C. The tachysterol may be isolated by combining it with citraconic anhydride or by forming its toluyl ester. The unconverted precalciferol may then be transformed to calciferol which is recovered for example as its 3,5-dinitrobenzoate. In an example, tachysterol is isolated in combination with citraconic acid which is acetylated to form the acetate of tachysterol-citraconic anhydride and the calciferol is obtained as its 3,5-dinitrobenzoate.
