In a pallet loading machine wherein layers of articles are deposited on a pallet, closing-in guides are arranged at the sides of the pallet with means for advancing the guides to compact and align each layer of articles as it is placed in position and for retracting the guides after the compacting is complete. The subject-matter of this Specification is described in Specification 811,353. Specification 811,355 [Group XXX] also is referred to.
