Abstract
810,865. Cutting stone: abrasive tools. BISTERFELD, E. [trading as BISTERFELD & STOLTING]. July 1, 1955 [July 3, 1954], No. 19035/55. Classes 60 and 124. A method of making a cutting tool comprises welding together metal sheets or foils having disposed between them particles of hard material, in such a manner that only well defined parts of the sheets or foils,are heated the unheated parts preventing flowing away of the heated metal. As shown, a diamond 7 may be placed between two sheets 3, 4 of metal and the sheets welded by electrodes 1, 2. The sheets may have depressions formed therein to hold the diamonds before welding. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown) the sheets may be heated by the passage of an electric current and pressed together by dies. In a further modification, Fig. 5, one sheet 30 may be heated by the passage of an electric current, a second sheet may rest on an electrically heated support 31 and a ram 33 having a cylinder 35 and piston 36 may press the sheets together, the piston descending and forming the sheet 30 about the hard particles 7 by compressing air or powdered graphite contained in the cylinder. The finished sheet may be cut to the pieces required to form cutting tools. A protective gas may be used during the operation to prevent oxidation of the metal sheets. The particles may be diamond grains or hard metal powder.
