Abstract

810,611. Coating continuous filaments. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. June 1, 1956 [June 15, 1955], No. 17062/56. Class 140. Apparatus for applying a size composition to a continuous filamentary material 10, e.g. glass, comprises an open tank 22, a driver roll 26 journalled to said tank with a substantial proportion of its periphery under the surface of the liquid in the tank, a belt guide 34 positioned laterally of roll 26 and outside the tank, a continuous belt 23 engaging the roll and the belt guide and driven by the roll, and a filament guide 13 positioned beneath the belt guide for guiding the filamentary material into contact with the outer surface of said belt where it engages the belt guide. The filament guide may be arcuate in shape and have a V-groove in its leading edge. The belt guide may be stationary and have a cylindrical surface of smaller diameter than that of the roll. A weir 29 extends transversely across the tank and forms a supply compartment 30 connected to an input line 32 and an overflow compartment 31 which is connected to a return line 33 the two lines being joined to a pump and coating supply (not shown). The tank may be fitted with a cover. The stationary belt guide may be mounted in an eccentric positioning device.
