Abstract

A method of coating a metallic article comprises (1) applying to the article by sputtering or evaporation in vacuo, or by electrodeposition, a thin interlayer of metal or alloy of lower melting point than the article, (2) spraying on to the interlayer a coating of metal or alloy of higher melting-point than the interlayer, and (3) heating the article so as to melt the interlayer and cause it to alloy with both the material of the article and the spray-coating material. The surface of the article may be roughened, and cleaned by means of a volatile solvent and heating in vacuo, prior to the application of the interlayer. Similarly, the surface of the interlayer may be roughened before it is spray-coated. The article may be composed of stainless steel or the high-temperature alloy consisting of C 0.1 per cent, Ti 1.8-2.7 per cent, Cr 18-21 per cent, Al 0.8-1.8 per cent, Si 1.5 per cent, Mn 1.0 per cent, Fe 0-0.5 per cent, Co 15-21 per cent, Ni remainder; the interlayer may be Au, Ag, Cu, 60-40 brass, Ag-5 per cent Pd, Fe-8 per cent B, Ni-8 per cent B, or the alloy consisting of Ni 70 per cent, Cr 20 per cent, B 4 per cent, Fe remainder; and the spray-coating material may be stainless steel or an alloy based on Fe and/or Ni and/or Co, e.g. the high temperature alloy referred to above. The coated article may finally be sintered in vacu.
