Abstract
Paint, lubricating and coating compositions containing a drying or semi-drying oil, a petroleum hydrocarbon or a modified alkyd resin are stabilized by the addition of dibasic lead phosphite; lead salicylate may also be used in admixture with the phosphite. Nonreactive pigments, e.g. titanium oxide or talc, may then be used instead of reactive pigments, e.g. zinc oxide, zinc carbonate, or lead carbonate. Aluminium silicate, mica, antimony oxide calcium carbonate, barium sulphate or lithopone may also be present. In examples: (1) 43 lbs. TiO2, 60 lbs. talc, 24 lbs. raw linseed oil, 1.4 lbs. pine oil and 4.0 lbs. mineral spirits are ground together with 20 lbs. drying alkyd resin, 6 lbs. mineral spirits, 0.35 lbs. 24 per cent lead naphthenate 1.5 lbs. dibasic lead phosphite in 3.6 lbs. linseed oil are added to the mixture, while lead salicylate may also be added to the paint composition thus produced and (2) dibasic lead phosphite is added to a lubricating greasc consisting of S.A.E. 30 oil thickened with dimethyl octadecyl cetyl ammonium bentonite or to a lubricating grease containing calcium soap. The dibasic lead phosphite and lead salicylate are described in U.S. Specification 2,783,159 and 2,483,469.ALSO:Paint, lubricating and coating compositions containing a drying or semi-drying oil, a mineral oil, an alkyd resin, a soap or like compound containing an hydrocarbon radical, are stabilized by the addition of dibasic lead phosphite; lead salicylate may also be used in combination with the phosphite. Non-reactive pigments, e.g. titanium oxide or talc, may then be used instead of reactive pigments, e.g. zinc oxide, zinc carbonate, or lead carbonate. Aluminium silicate, mica, antimony oxide, calcium carbonate, barium sulphate or lithopone may also be present. In examples: 43 lbs. TiO2, 60 lbs. talc, 24 lbs. raw linseed oil, 1.4 lbs. pine oil and 4.0 lbs. mineral spirits are ground together with 20 lbs. drying alkyd resin, 6 lbs. mineral spirits, 0.35 lbs. lead naphthenate, 15 lbs. 6 per cent cobalt naphthenate and 1.5 lbs. lead phosphite in 3.6 lbs. linseed oil was added to the mixture; lead salicylate may also be added; (2) a standard commercial sodium base grease mixed with S.A.E. 30 was mixed with 9 per cent of dimethyl octadecyl cetyl ammonium bentonite (known as "Bentone") and basic lead phosphite in amount of 10 per cent of the oil. The use of basic lead phosphite and lead salicylate as stabilizers for oils is described in U.S.A. Specifications 2,783,159 and 2,483,469. U.S.A. Specifications 2,531,427 and 2,531,440 also are referred to.
