810,401. Coating compositions for carbon papers and like manifolding materials. WAGNER VERWALTUNGESELLSCHAFT, G. Jan. 24, 1957 [Feb. 6, 1956], No. 2565/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 146(3) [Also in Group VIII] In carbon papers and like manifolding sheets of the colourless type in which the sheet is coated with a colourless dye former or intermediate which is transferred by typing or printing to a copy sheet where the colour of the dye is developed by contact with acid alkaline or oxidizing components of the copy sheet, as the colour formers employed are spiro-dipyrans which develop a a high-colour intensity on contact with acids. In one method both components of the colour reaction are contained in the one sheet e.g. an acid reacting paper is coated with an emulsion consisting of 1 part by weight of an 0.3 per cent solution of spiro-di-benzopyran in chlorodiphenyl is dispersed in 5 parts of a 20 per cent gelatose solution in water. The colour is then developed by breaking the emulsion by the pressure used in writing or printing. In :the second case the spiro-dipyran is applied to a sheet of neutral material which is used in contact with a sheet of acid acting paper. In an example the first sheet is coated with a composition consisting of 5 parts montan wax, 5 parts O.P. wax, 4 parts chlordiphenyl and 2 parts spiro-di-naphthopyran while the copy sheet is made up of 70 parts hydrochloric acid treated clay, 120 parts methylcellulose 2 per cent solution 10 parts glycerine, 40 parts water and 20 parts methanol. Typewriter ribbons can similarly be saturated with solution of the spirodipyran.
