Abstract

810,292. Valves. CRAIG, W. N. Aug. 3, 1956 [May 9, 1955], No. 13348/55. Class 135. In order to prevent syphoning from a domestic cistern or the like when the water supply is interrupted to a ballcock whose outlet pipe 8 discharges just above the base of the cistern, the float-controlled valve 3 admits water to the pipe 8 by way of a chamber 4 having an air vent passage 17 controlled by a valve 18 normally closed by the water pressure. If the supply is interrupted, e.g. by a frost stopcock which drains the rising main, the resulting suction opens the valve 18 to admit air to the chamber 4 and thus prevent syphoning. Baffles 7, 9 of circular section mounted in the pipe 8 serve to equalize pressure in the chamber 4 and assist a smooth and quiet flow. The valve 3 has a washer 5 and is controlled by a piston 10 in a stuffing box 11, the piston being actuated by a screw 12 adjustable in a lateral lug on the pivoted ball float arm 14.
