Abstract
Shaped articles are manufactured by pouring a fluid slip comprising or consisting essentially of a resin in liquid suspension into a porous mould which absorbs the liquid of the slip to leave a coherent cast which is then removed and sintered by heating. The slip preferably comprises an aqueous suspension of resin, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, or a polymerized hologenated ethylene, e.g. polytetrafluorethylene, containing a dispersing agent and a filler such as finely ground alumina or silica. If the suspension is rich in filler it may also contain a temporary binder, e.g. gum arabic, which is decomposed when the cast is sintered. The mould may be of plaster of Paris, and the absorption of liquid therein may be facilitated as by subjecting the slip to centrifugal force. The cast is preferably removed from the mould and dried before sintering it, and the mould surface may be coated with a release agent such as sodium alginate. A hollow cast of about 1/8 inch wall thickness and containing 30 per cent. by weight of polytetrafluorethylene and 70 per cent. of finely ground alumina may be sintered at 400 DEG C. for about 30 minutes.
