Abstract
809,811. Gas turbine plant. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 23, 1956 [Nov. 25, 1955], No. 35959/56. Class 110 (3). A gas turbine plant comprising in a common casing an axial flow compressor feeding a combustion chamber supplying combustion gas to a turbine driving the compressor and a useful output turbine positioned downstream of and coaxial with the first turbine, has a curved tailpipe which communicates with the atmosphere through an end opening the axis of which makes an angle less than 90 degrees with the axis of the casing and is provided with a depression in its wall on the outside of the curvature which supports a bearing for the turbine output shaft. The compressor 16 supplies air to an annular combustion system 18 feeding a turbine 20 driving the compressor. A separate useful output turbine 22 drives through a shaft 24 and reduction gear 39 a tractor propeller 42 or a pusher propeller 48, or both. The turbine 22 exhausts through a tailpipe 26 which is curved so that the axis of the end opening 28 makes an angle of less than 90 degrees, say 60 degrees, with the engine axis. The output shaft bearing 34 is supported by a pad 37 mounted on the outside of a depression 36 in the tail pipe. The tail pipe may be rotated so that its median plane does not coincide with that of the engine.
