Abstract
A suture package comprises a surgical suture in a package, and a sterilizing liquid which may be used as a tubing liquid or a jar liquid or both and which comprises a volatile, non-toxic storage liquid having dissolved therein a bactericidal substance which in the free base form has the formula <FORM:0809725/VI/1> wherein A stands for a chlorinated phenyl radical selected from the group consisting of mono- and di-chlorinated phenyl radicals and wherein n is selected from the integers 2 to 12. There may also be included in the sterilizing liquid a fungicidal agent which may be of the benzyl trialkyl ammonium chloride type such as an 8 to 18 carbon alkyl benzyl di-lower-alkyl ammonium halide, or phenyl mercuric benzoate, or an alkali mercuric iodide, such as sodium or potassium mercuric iodide, or a phenyl mercuric chloride, or phenyl mercuric nitrate, or sodium ethyl mercuric thiosalicylate. Preferably from 0.05 to 1 per cent of a salt of a 1,11-polymethylene bis [5-(halophenyl) biguanide] and 0.01 to 0.2 per cent concentration of the quaternary ammonium compound, and/or other fungicidal agents is used. The liquids may contain a corrosion inhibitor to protect needles, such as sodium nitrite, or plasticizers such as propylene glycol, or diethyl phthalate. Specified active ingredients are 1,11-hexamethylene bis [5-(parachlorophenyl) biguanide] diacetate, 1,11-pentamethylene bis [5-(para-chlorophenyl) biguanide] dihydrochloride, 1,11-tetramethylene bis [5-(para-chlorophenyl) biguanide], 1,11-hexamethylene bis [5-(ortho para-dichlorophenyl) biguanide] diacetate.
