Abstract
809,681. Automatic liquid-level control systems. BAILEY METERS & CONTROLS Ltd. March 19, 1957 [March 20, 1956], No. 8658/56. Class 38 (4). [Also in Groups XXXVIII and XL (c)] An ultrasonic transducer 1 (see Fig. 1), is so arranged in a valve oscillator circuit 3, 4 that when the liquid in a tank reaches a level 7 relay 5 is energized; the relay may actuate a bell or a lamp or may control a drain or a pump. The transducer capacitance when the liquid is below the datum level is such that oscillations in the circuit of valve 34 (see Fig. 2) ensue, causing relay operating valve 32 to be cut off. When the liquid reaches the datum level the transducer capacitance change, due to increased absorption of the ultrasonic waves of the liquid, inhibits oscillations the resulting conduction in valve 32 energizing relay coil 41. Capacitor 35 is chosen to give an oscillation frequency which is a resonant frequency of the transducer. Capacitors 35<SP>1</SP> are added manually, or automatically under thermostatic control, if the transducer capacitance varies with temperature. Details are given of various transducer mounting arrangements (see Figs. 4-7, not shown). In Fig. 8, not shown, the variation in level of a corrosive liquid is coupled mechanically to a piston which correspondingly varies the free surface level of a liquid determining the transducer circuit condition. Separate transmitting and receiving transducers are used in a further embodiment (see Group XXXVIII), Figs. 9 and 10 not shown.
