Abstract

809,528. Furnace linings. OUGHTIBRIDGE SILICA FIREBRICK CO. Ltd., BOOTH, C., and HEDLEY, C. S. April 4, 1957, No. 11061/57. Class 51 (2). A reinforced basic block used in lining the walls and roofs of metallurgical furnaces comprises a steel framework 11 enclosing steel tubes 12 welded to each other and to the frame, the complete assembly being filled with refractory 13 by ramming, pouring, vibration or by the use of guns or sand-slingers. Lugs 15 and 33 pierced with holes facilitate lifting. The refractory may include magnesite, alone or mixed with chrome, spinel or forsterite. Dolomite or alumina may also be used. If necessary, a bonding and/or hardening agent such as sodium silicate, sulphite lye, tar, bitumen or asphalt may be used. As applied to a circular segmental block, Fig. 2, the back face ends of the tubes 12 are connected by short, welded rods 16. A modified structure, Fig. 3, comprises slotted vertical and horizontal members 19 and 20 forming compartments of rectangular cross-section. A further modification. Fig. 5 (not shown), has horizontal plates between which are inserted crimped plates giving a series of triangular compartments. The invention is applied to a suspended furnace roof, Fig. 7, in which blocks 24 with back plates 25 carrying brackets 26 are pivotally connected to screwed rods 29 suspended from girders 30 by adjusting nuts 31 by which the roof arch is accommodated.
