Abstract

808,614. Hand tool handles. WARD & PAYNE Ltd. July 31, 1957, No. 24272/57. Class 61. In a handle construction for a chisel, screwdriver or like bladed tool having an integral tapered shank 2 widened in a direction away from the blade, the handle 5 has a spigot 7 adapted to fit a tapered socket 6 in the shank, and a cap 25 together with a stem running through a lengthwise bore in the handle and provided with screw threads to connect the cap to the socket. As shown one end of a screwed rod 17 is screwed into a tapped hole 15 at the bottom of the socket 6 and the other end is fitted in a tapped hole in the cap 25. A taper spigot 7 on the handle, fits the taper of the socket 6, a metal ferrule 10 being received on a non-tapered portion of the spigot 7 so that the surface 3 of the shank 2 forms a smooth continuation of the surface 4 of the handle. In a modification, only the ends of the rod 17 are screwed. In another modification the end 15 is fixed in the hole in the end of the shank other than by screwing and in another modification the cap is fixed to the rod.
