Abstract

Unsaturated non-halogenated compounds are polymerized using as catalyst an aromatic or heterocyclic compound having an epoxy group in the a ,b -position in an aliphatic side-chain, e.g. phenyl ethylene oxide optionally together with phenyl glycidyl ether. Specified unsaturated compounds are vinyl acetate, diallyl phthalate, trially cyanurate, styrene, divinyl benzene, methyl methacrylate and unsaturated polyesters derived from maleic anhydride or fumaric acid, phthalic anhydride, or adipic acid, and ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol of molecular weight 400, 1,3-propylene glycol or 1,3-butylene glycol. Polymerization may be effected under pressure. After gelling, hardening may be accelerated by raising the temperature. Driers, e.g. cobalt, lead and manganese naphthenates and cobalt octoate are preferably added when the polymerization is effected in the presence of air.
