Abstract
A flux forming part of an arc welding electrode (see Group XXII) contains a deoxidizer and a prefused slag-forming material but no gas or gas-forming materials. A flux for use in welding semikilled steel is formed of a base mixture of 20 parts sodium silicate, 50 parts rutile and 4 parts manganese oxide which is fused and pulverized. 80 parts of the base mixture are mixed with 40 parts prefused silicon and 30 parts prefused ferromanganese to produce the flux. Other suitable materials for incorporating in the flux are potassium, silicate, manganese titanium, ferro-silicon, ferro-titanium, or the oxides of silicon, vanadium, columbium, potassium, aluminium, zirconium, sodium and calcium. At least 75 per cent. of the oxide in the flux is rutile. Specification 807,646 is referred to.
