Abstract
Alkenes and cycloalkenes are produced by the dehydrochlorination of the corresponding chloro-compound by heating with a strong organic or inorganic acid which is miscible with the chloro-compound and removing the olefine and hydrogen chloride as formed; a strong acid is one defined as having a dissociation constant of at least 0.002 at 25 DEG C. The examples refer to the production of cyclohexene and hexene-2 from chlorocyclohexane and 2-chlorohexane respectively. Acids referred to are dichloroacetic, trichloroacetic, fluoroacetic, benzene sulphonic, toluene sulphonic, sulphuric and phosphoric acids. The reaction mixture may also contain a polar organic solvent or organic solvent boiling above 140 DEG C., there being referred to, acetic, propionic, butyric and benzoic acids, alkylphenols, decahydronaphthalene, nitrobenzene, o-dichlorobenzene and chloronitrobenzene. The process can be carried out continuously by introducing the chloro-compound into the heated acid, with or without solvent, at a rate which maintains the reaction volume constant, and continuously removing by distillation the olefine and hydrogen chloride. Batch operation may also be used.
