Class 89(3) [Also in Groups XXII and XXX] A fastener feeding means comprises a passage 18, 37 for carrying fasteners from a container 3, means 12 for introducing the fasteners into, and feeding them one at a time along, the passaged and a master control fluid pressure valve 59 and a supply control valve 58 for controlling pressure to the said means. A double acting piston 6 reciprocates the elevator 12 within the hopper 3 containing screws, nails or rivets, which descend from a container 92 under the control of a baffle 93. In its upper position, a slot. 13 in the elevator registers with a passage 18 down which the screws are fed by gravity beneath a bar 21 adjusted by a screw 22 according to the kind of fastener head. At the bottom of the passage a shuttle 30, Fig. 8, having an L- shaped slot 31 receives each screw in turn in the part 33 of the slot and delivers it to the pipe 37. The shuttle is reciprocated by a forked arm 48 attached to the piston 6 and engaging a curved arm 46 which is in contact with a spring 47 engaging a forked arm 39 on the shuttle. Movement of the piston 6 also operates the screw supply control valve 58 to direct a blast of air to the pipe 37 so delivering the screw to a serving head 67 attached to a pneumatic screw driver 56. The screw is held by a number of collet fingers 81 located by a ridge 82 on the head, the fingers being held thereon by an oil-proof elastic band 83 and prevented from rotation by projections 69<SP>2</SP>. When the tool is advanced against the pressure of a spring 74, the bit 79 rotates the screw. The collet is prevented from touching and marking the work by a foot 84. In operation, pressure on an arm 86 opens the valve 62 to cause air to pass to the master control valve 59. The piston 6 and elevator 12 descend, the screw supply control valve 58 is actuated to blow a screw along the pipe 37, and the shuttle is moved to receive a further screw. The air pressure holds the screw in the collet while the tool valve control 66 is operated and the bit 79 advanced. The lever 86 is then released to allow the elevator to ascend and pick up further screws while the shuttle delivers a screw to the pipe. A spring-pressed deflector 24 prevents wrongly positioned screws from entering the passage and returns them to the hopper. In a modification, the guide bar 21 is supported by spring clips so that it may be removed for inspecting the screw feed. A modified hopper 115, 116, Fig. 16, has a baffle 117 beneath which the screws feed to the reciprocating elevator 5. A.vertical wall 117A rises from the floor of the hopper in contact with the elevator so that the screws will not jam, against opposite hopper walls. The shuttle 30 carries, on an adjustable eccentric mounting 118c, a pin which permits the screws to drop into the shuttle one at a time, as in Specification 807, 443.
