[Also in Group XXIV] In a pin-and-box coupling, e.g. for a welldrilling string, the pin 2 and the box 3 are each provided with tapering screw-threads 7, 8 at least one of which when unloaded, deviates from a normal tapering screw-thread in such a way that when the coupling has been tightened up the inner flanks of the screw-thread on the pin and the outer flanks of the screw-thread on the box are more heavily loaded than the other flanks of the screw-threads. A normal tapering screw-thread is defined as one in which the pitch and taper are uniform throughout the length thereof, and the outer and inner flanks are defined as those flanks which are directed respectively away from and towards a plane M normal to the axis of the screw-thread and bisecting the length of the screw-thread. As shown in Fig. 1, the pin 2 is provided on a drill collar 1 formed with a shoulder 5 which is in contact with a shoulder 6 on a drill collar 3 formed with the box 4, and the screw-threads have flattened tips, and roots. The coupling may be made up by the application of mechanical power, or the box may be heated before being screwed on to the pin so that consequent shrinkage thereof contributes to the loading of the screw-threads. A local variation of pitch may be provided on one or both of the screw-threads near the middle thereof, or the pitch of the screw-thread at the smaller diameter end of the pin may be smaller than the pitch at the larger diameter end of the pin whilst the pitch of the screw-thread on the box is larger at the end corresponding to the smaller diameter end of the pin than at the other end of the box. In another case, both the screw-threads have a constant pitch, the pitch of the screw-thread on the pin being smaller than that of the box, and the taper of the pin at the larger diameter end being smaller and at the smaller diameter end being larger than the taper of the box. Further, the pitch of the screwthread on the pin may be smaller than that of the screw-thread on the box, the difference in pitch decreasing from the middle of the screwthreads towards both ends ; preferably, the pin has a normal tapering screw-thread, and the decrease of the difference in pitch is continuous.
